MISSION STATEMENT
KPU’s Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program prepares
graduates to be effective practitioners of acupuncture and Oriental herbal
medicine, and to draw upon other Asian medicine therapies. By providing a strong
cultural awareness of Oriental medicine, a solid understanding of conventional
medicine, and extensive clinical training, KPU’s program provides students with the skills
necessary to address a wide range of health issues, to counsel patients
regarding health and wellness, and to work collaboratively with healthcare
practitioners within a variety of clinical settings.
GOALS
Graduates of the Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program
will: • be skilled in Oriental medicine assessment and the treatment of patients using acupuncture and herbal medicine, and capable of using appropriate adjunctive
therapies such as Tui Na and Oriental nutritional counseling • be able to effectively convey an understanding of Oriental medical philosophy
and therapies to patients, other healthcare practitioners and the public • be knowledgeable about conventional medical terminology, pharmacology,
diagnostic procedures, and treatment options in order to communicate effectively
with patients and other healthcare practitioners, as well as be part of an
integrative healthcare team • be able to make appropriate referrals for emergency conditions and those
conditions not readily treatable by Oriental medicine • be knowledgeable about professional, ethical and legal requirements pertaining
to the practice of Oriental medicine in order to protect the rights of patients
and interact appropriately with other healthcare providers • have a holistic orientation to healthcare that emphasizes the promotion of
wellness and a healthy lifestyle, as well as the treatment of the underlying
root causes of illness rather than merely the relief of symptoms • have a basic literacy in research methodology as it pertains to Oriental and
conventional medicine, and be able to critically assess research literature • possess the skills necessary to be lifelong learners of Oriental medicine and
to continually deepen their skills
